Monthly Meeting

June 10, 2020
10:00 via Zoom

From Climate Change to a Transition in Energy Technologies

Prof. Dr. Friedrich Wagner,

Emeritus Scientific Fellow

Prof. Dr. Friedrich Wagner studied physics at the Technical University of Munich. After a research visit to US, he joined the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Munich were he became one of its directors. He was in charge of a significant experiment to create a little sun on earth, keep it in place with strong magnetic fields, and researched the physics for future energy generation. He was appointed Honorary Professor at the Technical University of Munich. After the German unification he helped founding a new Max-Planck Institute in Greifswald with the task to build and operate the fusion device Wendelstein 7-X (type Stellarator). Its purpose is to clarify the stellarator potential for a future fusion reactor. Although this experimental device will not produce electricity, it is used to evaluate the main features of a future fusion power plant. In Greifswald Wagner became Ordinary Professor at the Ernst-Moritz Arndt University. He has been awarded many prizes from Physical Societies around the world. (Look in Wiki!)

He retired in 2008, giving him more time for hobbies, particularly painting.  He has had many successful exhibitions of his work throughout Germany.
